Wednesday, 15th June: Mission flexible ferret will have to wait!!!
We decided to stay in Shetland for the day and wait for a better weather window!! ...looks like we might be in Sumburgh for a while!!
So today we had a really nice, chilled day exploring…
We got the plane refuelled so we didn’t have that hassle in the morning, then went for a lovely walk along the coast to Sumburgh Head at the southernmost tip of the mainland of Shetland. The lighthouse was built by Robert Stevenson in 1821 and is the oldest lighthouse in Shetland. From 1906 until 1987 there was also an active foghorn. The foghorn was restored in 2015 and sounds on special occasions. The lighthouse complex also has offices for the RSPB who look after the bird reserve which surrounds the lighthouse.
Thursday, 16th June: Operation flexible ferret - take two…!!
Waiting for some morning weather to clear before we try and make our way across to Bergen!! The weather there is not great early on, but due to clear in a few hours which should coincide well with our flight and arrival time!!
Weather depending… it may end up that we fly up to Florø rather than Ørsta as the weather will be a bit better further south, but we will still be above the 6-degree drop of the sun below the horizon which means - no dusk!!!
However,… none of this will be possible today… spoke to ATC and the information they are getting from the helicopters out at the rigs was saying that even they were having trouble landing in the fog!! So we made the decision not to fly!!!
Friday, 17th June
…. Still on Shetland!! Might look into getting permanent residency at this rate… today is definitely a no-fly-day!!! So we didn’t even try!
After a stormy wet morning sheltering in our cabin, doing some life admin, we hopped on the bus and ventured to Lerwick…
An incoming Instagram message from our friends at ATC suggested we might want to manoeuvre our plan into the wind as we were side on to what are expected to be some gusty winds in the evening!!! So a quick bus ride back from Lerwick and a very quick walk to the airport where the super lovely staff escorted us to Cherry so we could push her into the right position!!!
Then onto our yummy (well-earned) dinner!!
Saturday, 18th June
...Still no-fly-day!! So it’s off to St Ninian’s Isle for a blustery explorer!! Then chilling out in our cabin, protected from the elements!!
