Thursday, 7th July 2022 - Aberdeen to Oxford
Nothing like making a big British Airways passenger jet wait for little old us to take off...
HOME!!! after the longest (and most turbulent) flight we have ever done in the Cherokee - nearly 4 HOURS!! (Epic!)
We landed safely back in Oxford!! It was nice to be back on familiar ground... but it was sad as we walked away from our little Cherokee, after the incredible adventure we had just had together!
G-AYJR - you legend!!! 💙
Did I mention the packing...? I should mention the packing...!
A lot of thought and planning had to go into the packing - we had very specific weight and balance limits we had to take into consideration when loading up the Cherokee! 🤓
Even in summer, the weather in northern Scotland, the North Sea, and Norway is not always blue sky and sunshine. Who’d have thought?!
To do a trip like this on any kind of schedule requires an instrument rating. That said, once you have an instrument rating, an adventure like ours is just not possible. Flying this trip VFR was a significant challenge and I wouldn’t have done it any other way.
In some circumstances a straight-in approach at an unfamiliar airfield might be the best option – you can always go-around.
In controlled airspace where you are at risk of losing radio signal, it is worth getting cleared to higher altitudes than you can currently maintain to give you options.
Reindeer are naughty.
PS We won the Coventry Trophy for second place in the 2022 Pooleys Dawn to Dusk Challenge. Read more about the awards here.
